Winter Session 2010 Playoff/Championship Report
The Baltimore Broomball Club Winter Session 2010 had a few changes in the overall format including game play being broken into two divisions; points changing to 3 for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss; and two division winners and a wild card team taking part in the playoff week to determine the Winter Champion.
Tiny LunchboX (TLX) ended the session as the Monkey Division winner and the #1 overall seed with 12 points and a bye into the final game. H1N1 won the Attack Division with 8 points and Kid Malicious (KM) came through with a win in their final regular session game in order to secure the wild card spot.
H1N1 and KM took to the ice both in hopes of advancing to the next round. A great game was played for the full 36 minutes, only to end in a 0-0 tie. So off to overtime they went, 4 on 4 with goalies for 5:00 of sudden death time on the clock. And just like regulation the goalies were not letting anything in and the score remained 0-0. So it was time to try it without the men between the pipes, 4 on 4 no goalies and 5:00 sudden death. There were several near goals, none as close as that of H1N1’s Sandeep Mascarenhas moving from right to left just in front of the crease and with the ball traveling towards the net for what was sure to be the winning goal. But Jamie Janvier of KM had other plans for that ball and knocked it off its path to make the save and keep the game from ending just yet.
The buzzer sounded again, and the scoreboard still read 0-0. It was time for a shootout. Five players from each team would each get a chance to go one-on-one again Paul Seiffert for H1N1 and KM’s fearless leader, Peter Martin. It would take until the third round and the 6th shot for KM to take the lead on a goal by Jaime Frantz. But in the 5th round it would be H1N1’s Jason Cusick layout-self-pass move that he has practiced over the years that would tie the shootout round 1-1. KM’s had the final shot, but was not able to put it between the posts.
On to a sudden death shootout….one player from each team would shoot and if only one player scored, game over. I took four more round and eight more shots until Devin Williams beat Seiffert to end the game 1 hour and 25 minutes after the first ball had dropped.
Raring to go and keep the intensity up, KM was back on the ice only 15 minutes later to take on a well rested, but somewhat cold Tiny LunchboX. A solid first half was played by all with goals for TLX coming from Joey “Batman” Tercero and Chris “Slash” Matroniano (asst. Tercero). KM’s Nick Jarosinsky got his team on the board off a pass from Andrew Kaufmann and the clock showed 2-1 in favor TLX at the half.
TLX came off the bench for the second half to do what they had been doing most of the session, scoring goals. Captain Cory Koons pushed up from his defensive home to score unassisted just under 3 minutes into the half. And since Kevin Thompson was once again wearing jeans to play, that only meant one thing. He was going to score. And score he did. Twice. Thompson was helped by teammates Cory Koons and Diana Desierto. It would only take 36 minutes for this game to wrap up with a 5-1 win and the title of Winter Session 2010 Champs for the Tiny but Mighty LunchboX team.
Congrats to all for a great session and we’ll see most of you starting April 1st! If not…be on the lookout for summer pick-ups and, of course, be ready for Fall Session I in September!
